But not yet. I’ll wait till later in the article to tell you, because if I tell you now, you’ll have no reason to continue. Great. I think I just accidentally told you what suspense is. Oh well. Moving on!

Suspense is nothing without mystery. Mystery and suspense are two powerful forces pulling against each other throughout each and every story you’ll write. Mystery compels the reader to move forward, while suspense pulls back on the reigns, as if to say, “not yet, but soon.” Without good suspense, the mystery will fall flat on its face. Suspense sweetens the mystery, but you must always be sure not to sweeten it too much, or it will become sickly. There is a perfect mixture in every story, and it is up to you to strike the right balance.

A mystery isn’t simply a who-done-it. Mystery comes in a variety of forms. It could be something as rudimentary as,will Gary end up with Cindy?, or as complex as how on Earth did this monkey get inside a sealed bank vault, and why is it wearing a wet suit and a tiara? A writer’s job is to establish the mystery, and slowly reveal clues to its resolution as the story unfolds. The longer you hold the tension, the more suspenseful your story will be. If the scene with the monkey played out, and one of the characters quickly explained how the monkey got in the vault and why he was wearing the odd costume, there would be no suspense at all. That would be the end of the story. But revealing a cryptic note scratched on the inside of the tiara, gives the reader a reason to continue on. Continuing this process for several chapters will make the resolution much more exciting and rewarding for the reader. This is what we call macro-suspense. It happens across the entire story, from plot point to plot point, right up to the resolution.

Micro-suspense happens within a scene. Like macro-suspense, the mystery is presented, and the reader must wait for the resolution, but there is a small twist. With micro-suspense, the writer uses the thoughts and emotions of the main character to build tension, as he applies suspense to lengthen out the mystery. Imagine this scenario: the main character hears a noise coming from downstairs in the kitchen, and he goes to investigate. As each moment passes, the intensity of his fears and paranoia leak into the mind of the reader. His fear of the dark mixed with rumors that this new house he has moved into may be haunted, draws the reader into the gravity of the moment. The suspense holds the reader back from the resolution, while tension breaths energy into the scene. Good suspense requires a good mystery and a precise amount of tension. Never give the reader everything up front. Don’t tell them what is in the wrapped gift as you hand it to them. You’ll ruin the surprise!

Imagine your story like a poker game. The mystery is: who will win? The suspense is: how long the card game must last before the winner reveals his hand. The more twists and turns, and the more drama that erupts, the more exciting the reveal will be. Don’t let the audience have what they want right away. Dangle it in front of them. Let them feel as though the game is going poorly for our hero, then turn the tables, and give the audience a thrill. Let the tension of each moment build in suspense, until all your reader can think about is seeing those cards fanned out on the table. That is how you write good suspense. And remember, your resolution is your gift to the reader, make it something they would have never expected, and something they will treasure forever.

Questions Christians Hope No One Will Ask ...

According to Mark Mittelberg, a recent Barna survey indicates that these are the questions Christians are most afraid to be asked. Are you afraid to be asked these questions? If not, do you know someone who is? Let's work together to equip the saints.

Q: Why are Christians against same-sex people getting married?

The easy answer is: same-sex couples want to redefine what God has already defined. The word marriage has been around for a long time, and it has a definition. It is the union of a man and a woman before God. If you don't like that definition, get your own word. You don't get to redefine what marriage and family are, because you don't believe in God.

But that's not the real question. The real question is: why are Christians so hateful that they would deny the monogamous union of two people who love each other?

Well. Because it's a sin. I know that is hateful to say, but we're not the ones saying it, God is. He talks about it in the Old Testament (Lev 20:13) and the New Testament (Romans 1:26). But to be fair, same-sex coupling is not the only sin on the list in Romans 1, there is also fornication (that's sex out of marriage), covetousness (wanting people's stuff), deceit, whispering, backbiting, pride, lack of mercy, envy, debate, etc, etc... Do you recognize any of these as commonly accepted behavior in America today? As a culture we seem to have embraced fornication and covetousness. Does that make them right? The beginnings of sin are sometimes innocent in appearance, but prolonged disobedience to God blossoms into something all together more hideous.

Critics argue that same-sex coupling is not behavioral, but people are born with a desire for the same sex. And that, if they were born that way, and they're not hurting anyone, what's the big deal? Okay, let's say it is true. Let's entertain the thought that the corruption of our parents is passed down to us genetically. I can tell you with all honesty, I was born to be a lot of things I can't be like a liar, drunkard, backstabber, fornicator, and coveter. God says don't do those things, and when I obey what God says, the world is a better place. If my father was a drunk, and he passed the drinking gene down to me, does that make it okay for me to get plastered and neglect my responsibilities as a husband and father? I may not be out in the bar getting wrecked and starting brawls, but am I really a benefit to society? Am I really, not hurting anyone?

So there is the answer. Christians are against same-sex marriage, because it is an attack on the institution of marriage-as defined by God. And we are bound by God to fight against sin, in all its forms.

Q: Why do you believe God exists at all?

First, DNA is language. You can't have language without a creator. The Earth and everything in it, is the result of a creator. We are not evolving, but instead, de-evolving. Everything is wearing out. There are no positive mutations. Any evolution you see is micro evolution or adaptation. Every creature on this Earth is complete, and irreducibly complex. You don't become a bombardier beetle—with the ability to set fire to your backside—by experimentation. You either blow fire out your hiney, or you don't. Simple. There are no intermediate species. Have you ever seen a pigfish? I rest my case. You were created. Moving on.

Q: Why would God allow evil and suffering?

Evil is the product of choice. If God were to not allow evil, he would also have to not allow choice.

As for suffering, suffering is an amazing thing. Looking back on your life, when did you grow the most? During the easy times? During the fat times? No, it was during the hard lean times. Suffering makes us stronger. All the disciples suffered. Even God's own son suffered. But there is more to the question, isn't there? Does God enjoy watching us suffer? That's what the author really wants to know. How could a good God watch evil, and not do something about it?

We are in the fire of our own choice. We made a choice in the Garden. Each and every one of us was genetically inside Adam. We all eat the fruit. We all chose to explore knowledge that God said was forbidden to us. And now, we are seeing the penalty for not trusting God. God didn't force us to eat the fruit, yet we shake our tiny fists at him and say, how can you allow all of this pain?

If there were no Hitlers, or Jeffery Dahmers, how would we understand the devastating error of choosing not to trust God? History is filled with man's sin and failure, and it is all a testament to the truth of God. We say same-sex is okay, we say fornication is okay, we say drinking and partying is okay, and then scream at God for allowing all of this destruction to happen in our lives.

While we suffer for the decision we made in the Garden, God came and suffered for a decision he did not make. Whose suffering is more unjust?

Q: Why trust the Bible when it's full of mistakes?

Mistakes? Really? There is no other book on Earth as well preserved as the Bible. Coincidentally, there is no other book in history as hated and hunted. Men have tried to destroy the Bible since its inception. Yet, because of the dead sea scrolls, and other such archeological discoveries, we can see that the Bible is a miraculously preserved book. Are there errors? Yes. There are minor typos, that do not change the message of the scriptures. After thousands of years of being transcribed and transported throughout the Earth, you would expect the Bible to be an absolute mess. We don't want to look at that though. We want to focus on the fact that one word is missing out of the entire book of Isaiah.

The reality is, Christians don't stand on every written word of the Bible, but on the message of Jesus Christ. Jesus said “I am the Truth”. If you read his words, and don't believe, the truth is not in you. Simple as that.

Q: How could a loving God send people to hell?

I'll let C.S. Lewis answer this one.

"There are only two kinds of people in the end: those who say to God, "Thy will be done," and those to whom God says, in the end, "Thy will be done." All that are in Hell, choose it. Without that self-choice there could be no Hell. No soul that seriously and constantly desires joy will ever miss it. Those who seek find. Those who knock it is opened. " ~ C.S. Lewis

Q: What makes you think Jesus was more than just a good teacher?

He fulfilled hundreds of prophecies regarding his coming, healed the sick, raised the dead, walked on water, and other amazing miracles. He was a humble builder who never wrote a word about himself, yet his words remain to this day. And the birth of Jesus Christ marked a new beginning for time itself. Can a good teacher do all that? Do we live 2011 years after Budda?

Q: Why are Christians so judgmental?

If a Christian is being judgmental, they are going against what the Bible says. The Bible says Judge not (Mat 7:1). Jesus speaks of us as trees, bearing fruit. A good tree bears good fruit, and a bad tree bears bad fruit. We shouldn't be judging each other, but we should be watching for trees that bear bad fruit, because that is evidence that someone is not what they claim to be. There are wolves in the sheep pen, and God wants us to be watching for them, because they intend harm.

So, if a person is being judgmental, they fall into the backbiter category, and God hates that (as we discussed in the first section). We are, however, called to be fruit inspectors, because the world is a dangerous place with sin in it.

I hope you found this helpful. text-align: left;">In John 10:9 the Lord Jesus said, "I am the Gate". If you want to truly understand what He meant by that, hang with me through this short story.

In Jerusalem, in the wall of the old city, is a gate called Zion. I wish I could prattle on about how I know the history of that gate, and impress you with my historical knowledge, but the sad truth is, I honestly don't remember a word the tour guide said about it. While he was explaining its amazing historical significance—pausing every third word to translate Hebrew to English in his head—I found myself staring in wonder at the size of the vehicles that could fit through such a small opening. I know, you are amazed by me right now, aren't you? What can I say? I notice things other people don't notice. I'm a writer of speculative fiction. My brain never stops.

While our group was carefully absorbing the rich history of the old city, I was noticing chipped rock on the edge of the gate wall and the evidence of past collisions on some of the bumpers passing by. This gave me reason to be concerned for the hundreds of pedestrians squeezing through the gate along side men with such notably questionable driving records. It was a recipe for disaster, and I was unable to look away. It was then that something miraculous happened. The tour guide's voice grew lucid in my my ear, and four words screamed for my attention. “Jesus is the gate.”

I turned a blank stare toward him, as though he had bugs on his face, and it was as if a switch flicked. The last five minutes of dialog—I had considered too inane to focus on—played back in my head like a vintage reel to reel tape deck. And as my mind pieced together tour guide talking points—I didn't even realize I heard—I discovered something profound.

As it turns out, a gate today is not what it once was. In the days of King David, Zion gate would have been the only way in and out of the city. It was the central point of entrance, and therefore, the prime place to be, if one wanted to know what was happening outside the walls of the city. Travelers coming into the city would tell men sitting at the gate, what dangers they had seen on the road. And travelers leaving the city would speak to the same men and find out what the latest news was—to protect themselves from thieves, marauders, and armies on the march. The gate wasn't just an entrance, it was the focal point of knowledge. A man who chose not to stop at the gate, was considered a fool, because the information one obtained at the gate was current, and relevant, and able to save one's life.

Did you catch that? Jesus is the gate. He is the only way. He is the source of knowledge to protect us from danger. To not stop and see Jesus before going on a journey is foolish. He has current and relevant information to keep us safe. But more than that, the knowledge that comes from Jesus is able to save us.

Are you planning anything: a job change, a big purchase, or marriage? Consider this lesson of “The Gate” and make sure to talk with Jesus, before you head out on your journey. You'd be a fool not to.

If this is your first time to my blog, it is because I have already read about you, and found that we are like-minded. And since the van wasn't the only thing broke, my wife decided to pray. She stood in the snow covered driveway, holding the hand of our three year old daughter, and asked the Lord-- if it wasn't too much trouble-- would he please fix it? As the prayer floated to heaven, she smiled down at our precious little girl and said, “Won't it be fun to see how God fixes our van?”

Now, between my wife and I, there is a debate on whether or not it was exactly the next day when her brother stopped by, but for the sake of this article, let's just say it was-- because it's my article and I get to be right this time.

Her brother's reason for stopping in had nothing to do with our van, but in the course of the conversation, he asked about it. My wife explained that it wouldn't start, but it was no big deal. The conversation would have usually stopped there, but to both our surprise, he said, “I'll take a look at it”, and before we knew it, he was out in the driveway with the hood up, poking around inside. Now you have to understand, my wife's brother has about as much insight into the magical workings of automobiles as I do, and he's the last person I would have expected to volunteer for such a task. Yet there he was, out in our driveway, in the freezing rain, with his head under our hood.

It was no big shock to any of us when he finally decided he had no idea what was wrong-- but that wasn't about to stop him. He flipped his cell phone open and gave his mechanic friend a call. Only problem was, his friend drove truck for a living, and the chances of him being home were slim.

Well, not only was his friend home, he was willing to come take a look. He braved the weather, drove across town, climbed over and under our van in the bitter cold, and figured out what was broken. Unfortunately, the part was more than we could afford-- but-- unwilling to accept defeat, my wife's brother went to the store and put the part on his credit card, and his friend installed it right there in our driveway.

And so my wife looked at my daughter and said, “wasn't that fun, seeing how God fixed our van?” Needless to say, our daughter was thrilled.

Now, a skeptic might say my wife just has a perceptive brother with an oversized hero bone, but I like to believe there is more to this story than a simple act of kindness. I know God uses people to intervene in our lives. I don't understand how it works, but I have seen it too often not to believe. Yet even as a believer, I have moments when my faith falters.

Maybe it's different for you, but when I seek God, I don't hear a Charlton Heston voice from heaven saying, “Go forth, my child and it shall be as thou hath prayed it!” Instead it is more of a prompting in my spirit, or a confirmation from something in the Word. And yet sometimes, when I sense God speaking, I can't help but wonder, Is it really him? Or is it just my over active imagination? And, frankly, it bugs me. How many times does God have to prove himself to me?

Faced with this spiritual dilemma I did what any rational person would do: I wrote a supernatural thriller. In this, my second novel, Messages, I explore the concept of faith by creating an exaggerated allegory. Instead of a Christian, the main character is an agnostic, and instead of a still small voice, I gave him an in-your-face conversation with God-- by way of messages leaping off signs and t-shirts and such. The question this character must answer is, Can you trust these messages to protect you from terrorists while you hunt down a dirty bomb in the heart of a large city? I'll be the first to admit, it's an odd way to work through one's spiritual trust issues, but surprisingly, it helped. By writing Messages I was able to look at this concept of trusting God from an entirely new perspective-- and as a result, my faith was increased. It is my hope that it will increase your faith as well.

John Michael Hileman
Author of Messages and VRIN: ten mortal gods

A supernatural Thriller, with an unexpected hero.

What can you buy with $2.99? A bag of chips? Being a self-published author is ridiculously hard. It is not unlike standing in Times Square shouting, “Notice me!” while the other million people around you shout the same thing, at the same time. You know you're special. You know you have a gift. But how can you possibly get anyone to notice you with all those other people around? How can you make your voice rise above the collective masses? John Locke figured it out-- but that's not why I love the guy. It isn't that he did what others couldn't. It isn't that he did what I hope to one day do--sell a million books on Amazon. The reason is actually tied to why I love my mom.

My mother is a strong woman, but that has not always been a good thing. In my eighteen years growing up, I lived in five states, attended ten schools, and decorated thirty-some-odd bedrooms with my limited collection of tasteless junk. During those years I was a witness to four of my mom's six marriages (because one happened before I was born, and one happened when I wasn't looking). So I know what it feels like to have the things I love torn from my life, and, as the perpetual New Kid, I know all to well what it feels like to be in an enormous crowd, and feel utterly alone.

Though I'm not a fan of the fallout and destruction my mother left in her wake, I have always been impressed by her strength and resilience. I have no memories of her looking worried or defeated. Even in the midst of the hardest trials, she always seemed to have it together. And anyone who knows my mom will tell you, she always did what she was going to do, and no one was going to stop her.

Thankfully, God took the heart of that strong willed woman and changed it. Now, I'm happy to say, she is using her strength to be a faithful wife of almost twenty years, a trustworthy daughter to her aging mom, and an immovable rock for our entire family. She is doing the hardest thing she has ever done, and I have never been more proud.

John Locke has this kind of strength. When the world was telling him, “You're less than nobody. You're not even a published author," John refused to listen. When bad reviews started coming in saying, “This book reads like it was written by a boy in junior high school,” he refused to allow those voices to define him. It takes great strength to stand against a raging current, but like in the example of my mom, strength alone does not produce good results. I don't admire John Locke because he is strong, but rather, because he uses his strength to help others. Instead of seeing all those other struggling authors as competition, John chooses to see them as fellow shipmates sharing in a grand adventure! Rather than being yet another voice screaming, “Notice me!" John is shouting, “Notice THEM!”. How cool is that?

That is why I love John Locke and my mom. Through their examples, I know what true strength looks like. It is selfless and confident, noble and true, and is not swayed by public opinion. But most importantly, it does not seek it's own ends. If I emulate a strength like that, I believe I will not only find a greater and more lasting success than I could have ever dreamed, in the end, I won't have to share in my success alone. And, this New Kid wants that more than you could possibly know.

<div style="margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; Do you have them? If you don't, I highly suggest grabbing a couple.

I didn't want children, but I recognized the gleam in my wife's eye when she brought the topic up, some fourteen years ago. The unmistakable twinkle that said, “resistance is futile.” And, it was. I realized there was no chance she would ever let this one go, and so a pact was made. I agreed to let her have children, and she agreed to raise them. There would be no changing of diapers for this guy! No sir. If she wanted kids, she would have to deal with all that misery.

Within the first week I had already changed ten dirty diapers and there was no end in sight! This kid was a factory. I've never seen anything eat so little and go so much. Anyway. I digress.

I didn't want children. I liked my freedom. I liked being the biggest child in the house-- although my wife would contend that I still am. I had plans for my life, and they didn't include: a filthy house, filthy diapers, constant screaming, ketchup on my new pants, and eventually car pooling. Do you know I have held in my hands every gross thing that can come out of a human body? I have my children to thank for that! I was duped! Bamboozled!! This was not the deal we made that fateful day! She was going to take care of the baths, and the crying, and the chocolate in my dress shoes. We had a deal!

Besides the constant work, there is also the emotional trauma. Like the time we were in the drug store and my daughter tugged on my sleeve, pointed at the woman in front of us, and said, “Daddy, that lady is fat.” By this point, I had already survived years of being a father, and due to rigorous conditioning, I was able to think on my feet. I crouched down and said, “Honey, if you don't have something nice to say about someone, you shouldn't say anything at all.” My daughter silently pondered the words of her father, and the snickers from the eight customers loitering the cramped reception area slowly subsided.

I felt another tug on my sleeve. My daughter looked up at me with her big innocent eyes and whispered-- what could only have been the resolution of three minutes of heavy contemplation-- “Daddy, that fat lady has nice shoes.”

As I look back on the last fourteen years of torture, and reminisce about how I held down a full time job, a part time job, and pursued the dream of being an author, while serving my wife, my family, my church, and these crazy people my wife gave birth too, I have to ask myself a question: was it worth it? My answer would have to be a resounding, you betcha!

Raising kids is hard. Heck! Life in general is hard! But I would not be the man I am today, if not for my children. I would not know the true depths of love, if it were not for them. They are my passion. They are my very heart.

When my son was born he would not stop crying, unless his daddy held him. The first night home from the hospital, we tried putting him in his crib several times, but he wasn't going to have any of that. He wanted to be with daddy, and there was no reasoning with him. If anyone in the entire apartment building was going to get some sleep, I was going to have to hold him through the night. I cradled him in my arms and sat on the couch with half a dozen pillows tucked in around us-- and that's where we stayed-- all night.

From the very first night God was telling me something. This is going to be hard. This is going to be uncomfortable, and, yes, your arms are going to fall asleep. And that hurts. A lot. But, you're holding something precious in your hands. You're holding a human life. And for some unknown reason, this wrinkly little boy loves you more than anything else in this world. He needs you-- and only you-- to be his dad. It is a great responsibility, and I'm giving this responsibility to you.

Now, fourteen years later, all I can say is, "Thank you, God. Thank you for my children."

Share this with a frazzled parent in your life.

If you enjoyed this story, consider friending me on Twitter.
